Contexts

A context limits the task list to the tasks in chosen parts of your nodes – one project, one area of life, "at home", "at work".

Marks: include and exclude

A context is a set of marks on nodes: include or exclude. A task belongs to the context by the nearest marked node on its way up (the task itself included): an include shows it, an exclude hides it. So you can include "Work" and exclude "Work › Archive" inside it.

  • With several parents, one path with an include as its nearest mark is enough to show a task.
  • A context without marks shows all tasks; one with only excludes shows everything except them.

Marking from the focused node

The focused node's menu (☰ at its top right) has an entry for the current context: Add to context or Remove from context. It sets the mark that makes the node and everything below it belong (or not belong) to the context. A mark set on the node itself shows as ✓ (included) or ✗ (excluded) at the end of its attributes line.

The working context

The context the task list uses right now is the working context. It is kept in this browser tab only, so another tab can show another one. Its marks are shown in the context line of the task list, where each mark can be switched between include and exclude or removed.

Named contexts

Save a working context under a name (Save as…) to use it again, also on your other devices. The context line's first dropdown loads a named context or none – all tasks. After changing a loaded context, Save updates it; switching away asks whether to discard the changes. Named contexts can be renamed, deleted and shared with friends like nodes: owners may change and share them, others use them (write may change them too).

A shared context reveals nothing: its marks only count for nodes you can read anyway.
